Brad Walker, an unemployed Jobs with Justice activist from Arlington, recently discovered the whereabouts of jobs “lost” from companies within 50 miles of his zip code. The jobs are in other companies. Walker was using the new “Job Tracker” feature from Working America (http://www.workingamerica.org/jobtracker). He put in his Arlington zip code and got 67 businesses in a 50-mile radius that had outsourced jobs! “But the bad news is,” Walker laments, “they didn't say how many jobs each company had outsourced.”
To get a better idea about job losses, Walker checked to see how many companies have filed mass layoff
notices under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN Act). There are 237 companies in his same area. “The biggest total seems to be PRC - Carrollton which laid off 1512 employees on June 30, 2008. Next would be STMicroelectronics, Inc., which has filed several notices for a total of almost 1500. Others include BAE Systems Controls, Inc. (450), 2601 Metropolis Corporation/Bright Point (430), and Sell-Thru Services, Inc. (STS) (314),” he concludes.
