Rested Yet? There's So Much More To Do!

National JwJ staffer Krista Hanson, center, spoke Nov 7 with church and community leaders about the new Workers Rights Board

National Jobs with Justice Southern Organizer Krista Hanson stirred up a lot of creative juices during her visit to North Texas November 6-8. The national organization is completing its surveys for a new 5-year strategic plan. North Texans weren't shy about giving our suggestions. The plan should be ready in early January, perhaps in time for us to launch our own strategic planning process at our January meeting.

Meanwhile, activists across the nation are throwing themselves into the fight for the Employee Free Choice Act. EFCA would make it easier, after 50 years of misery, for workers to organize themselves into unions. The broad question of organizing rights should concern all of us, and all of us are needed to find a solution. That will be one of the main topics at our regular 2nd Wednesday meeting, 7 PM November 12 at Oak Cliff Methodist Church, 547 E Jefferson in Dallas. Parking and entrance in the rear.

Here are a tiny few other things coming up:

Transport Workers Union Local 555 has invited supporters to their picket line at Southwest Airlines. They want a decent contract. Join us 1 PM to 4 PM at the Entrance to Love Field Airport, corner Mockingbird and Cedar Springs. Park at tthe Holiday Inn Select on Mockingbird

The Sweat Free Dallas Campaign Meeting is Thursday, November 20, 7:00 p.m.at Northaven United Methodist Church, 11211 Preston Rd.

A street demonstration is scheduled across the street from the First Baptist Church entrance on San Jacinto Street at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov 16. Dallas' gay community needs everybody's support in opposing a new evangelical assault against civil liberties. For more information e-mail Fulcher at samblade8@yahoo.com.

On December 13, the new Workers Rights Board expects to hold its first hearing.

United for Peace and Justice wants a 6th Anniversary Mobilization in Washington DC on March 19, 2009. It's the anniversary of the 'Shock and Awe' campaign that launched the US war and occupation in Iraq.

JwJ national is calling for our best thinking on the economic crisis and the best possible response. Check www.jwj.org for info on the "Grinch of the Year" contest. We get to make nominations.

If anybody wants to help me stay on the radio, they could make a donation at www.knon.org. Put "Workers Beat" as your favorite program, even if it's not true. Last Wednesday 8-9 AM, I had the Chairperson of the Dallas Democrats explaining, in part, why Dallas County is the envy of the state. Every Wednesday, we discuss workers' issues with activists on 89.3 FM and www.knon.org.

Krista Hanson made a special trip to get ideas from UFCW 540's President, Johnny Rodriguez
