Children and grandchildren of union members apply for union-funded scholarships each spring. Individual union locals, national unions, federations, and related organizations often offer scholarships.
The Dallas Central Labor Council interviewed a large number of applicants on the evening of April 4. Young people with college aspirations took a multiple-choice and an essay test, then endured an interview with four unionists. All of the applicants met the scholarship criteria and then some. Before they saw the first few, the interviewers were groaning and moaning that all of the young people were greatly deserving, and that they would never be able to choose only three for recommendation to the State AFL-CIO.
